Biomonitoring of Coral Bleaching - A Glimpse on Biomarkers for the Early Detection of Oxidative Damages in Corals

نویسنده

چکیده

Corals live in a symbiotic life with single-celled algae, zooxanthelle. Anthropogenic threats and natural threat-mediated stress destabilize the photosynthetic electron transport chain resulting in an increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in symbiont algae and causes coral bleaching. In this review, the early warn‐ ing system and biomarkers for oxidative damages in corals are explained. The re‐ view also discusses (1) the mechanism of coral bleaching, (2) the uses of biomarkers to detect the early signs of bleaching, and (3) laboratory and field studies that are carried out on biomarkers and coral bleaching.

Specific Thermal Regime and Coral Bleaching Pattern in Hengam Island, the Eastern Persian Gulf

Thermal anomaly is among factors initiating coral bleaching and mortalities and threatening coral reefs worldwide. Therefore, susceptibility of corals to thermal stress is a central concern in reef conservation. In this study, we evaluated underwater temperature during 2012-13 and bleaching status of corals during summer 2012 in Hengam Island located in the eastern Persian Gulf. Hengam coral...

Investigation of the effect of physical parameters of seawater on the health of branched corals in Chabahar Bay

Background and Objectives: ?????? Methods: ?????? Findings: ?????? Conclusion: ????? Coral ecosystems, like other natural habitats, are under effect by global warming. Every year we see the bleaching of corals in different parts of the world. Since the physical parameters of seawater are affected by meteorological phenomena, so in this study using ten-year data of oceanographic buoys, the ...

Prediction of Bleaching in Coral Reef Communities Using a Temperature Index(Southern and northern Persian Gulf)

Sea surface temperature is one of the most effective physical parameters that affects the health of coral reefs communities.High frequency of the bleaching phenomenon has extensively occurred in the Persian Gulf in the recent years due to the increase in temperature and increased changes in the sea surface temperature (SST) resulting in great mortality in the coral communities. The aim of this ...

Oxidative stress and seasonal coral bleaching.

During the past two decades, coral reefs have experienced extensive degradation worldwide. One etiology for this global degradation is a syndrome known as coral bleaching. Mass coral bleaching events are correlated with increased sea-surface temperatures, however, the cellular mechanism underlying this phenomenon is uncertain. To determine if oxidative stress plays a mechanistic role in the pro...

The Effects of Combined

We are using a novel cellular diagnostic system (CDS) to assess the physiological statusof corals by assaying specific parameters of cellular physiology. In a recent series of papers, wedemonstrated how this technology can be used to characterize coral health. In laboratory studies, diagnostic cellular parameters distinguished the separate and combined effects of heat and lighton...
